Can someone explain stock indices to me?

For example:

I know GOOG is the company abbreviation, Google is the company name, but what do the other numbers signify?

Also what is the Volume? Market Cap?

It gained 73 cents. Which was 0.13 percent of the previous days closing price

Volume is how many shares were bought and sold.

Average volume is the average over a certain time period, like over the last 10 days or 3 months is what they usually go by.

Market cap is the number of shares outstanding multiplied by the stock price. The total market value of the company.

Could you please explain in simple terms what stock market index/indices mean?

How do they affect the economy if they went up and high? what do they represent?

A stock market index is just a measure of the entire volume of a particular stock market. An example would be the Dow Jones Industrial Index, which is an index measuring the market for industrial stocks. Stocks are a way for publicly traded companies to attain capital for their operations, and stock markets are just markets in which investors can exchange their money in exchange for stocks which can either increase or decrease in value depending on the demand for their stocks (which is influenced by factors like the activities of the company, their future plans, market conditions, etc.). If an index goes up, it just means that there is more investment going on in the stock market, and vice versa. That is why people look at these indexes as indicators of what is going on in the overall market. However, just because an index is increasing doesn’t necessarily mean that an economy is doing better. There are all sorts of other factors, of which there isn’t a lot of agreement on, which affect the well-being of an economy.

How would I figure this out:
What is the average amount by which a stock index moves in a one-month period? (e.g. SPY, QQQQ, etc.)
What is the amount of 1,2,3 standard deviations?
I think I’d need historical price data and a statistics program. What would be a good source for a table of historical stock index data?
Any hints on how to start?

What stock indexes include a lot of service-related companies in them?

I have to create a project that involves finding stock indexes that are service-related. I want to find multiple stock indexes that hold mostly service related companies in them. I am not looking for the major indexes (S&P 500, Dow Jones), but index that companies like Vanguard for instance would create. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hey guys, I am trying to learn about stock markets & basic terminology. Sensex, Nifty, S & P 500 are all stock indices, but what do these actually mean and what do they measure?

They are a measure of market sentiment. They try to show the general feeling of investors for a category rather than for a single company. This can be interesting when there is a divergence, such as S&P500 is going down on a certain day but Exxon is going up can be a bullish sign for Exxon.

My Economics teacher asked me to convert the stock market returns of some countries into dollar terms. I don’t know how I can do this… Can someone explain?

To convert stock market indices into dollars, you need to find out the number of shares on each index. This is going to be the tough part of your search. However, the formula is easy, as I have it below.

Index level= Σ(Price of stock* Number of shares)*Free float factor/ Index Divisor.

The *Free float Adjustment factor represents the proportion of shares that is freefloated as a percentage of issued shares and then its rounded up to the nearest mulitple of 5% for calculation purposes. To find the free-float capitalization of a company, first find its market cap (number of outstanding shares x share price) then multiply its free-float factor. The free-float method, therefore, does not include restricted stocks, such as those held by company insiders.

While one might track this portfolio’s value in dollar terms, it would probably be an unwieldy number – for example, the S&P 500 market value is roughly $10.3 trillion. Rather than deal with ten or more digits, the figure is scaled to a more easily handled number, currently at 1093 as of 11/13/09. Dividing the portfolio market value by a factor, usually called the Index divisor, does the scaling.

What are the units they measure stock indexes in?

They’re always talking about how many "points" the Dow is up, or how the Nasdaq has lost 0.2% of its points. But, what are these points measuring? Don’t they have a better name for them than "points"?

points just mean dollars and cents.
