I’m trying to create a stock index chart. This chart should show how various stocks are doing against the S&P over a period of time. Once I down load the historical stock prices into excel what are the two formulas I need to enter in the "blank" columns to the right to get the information I need to create my graph.
Sounds like you are trying to create an index.
For the S&P or any of the stocks you choose, you want to divide the day’s closing price by the 1st day’s closing price.
If you pulled data from January 1st, 2007 for today, you would divide the closing price on May 2, 2008 by Jan 1, 2007. You should probably multiply your results by 100. This will give you an index value where Day 1 = 100
